Child Custody “Safe Zones” Law Aims to Make Florida Child Custody Exchanges Safer

Child Custody “Safe Zones” – How will They Work Under New Florida Laws?

According to local news reports, Fox 13 News Tampa Bay, the new child custody exchange “Safe Zones” law in Florida will create areas at local sheriffs’ offices throughout the state where parents can safely pick-up and drop-off their children pursuant to child visitation schedules and parenting plans. The law requires that these “Safe Zones” have adequate lighting, signs or lights that are purple in color, and video surveillance of the zone that is recorded 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and saved for no shorter than 45 days. Each Florida sheriff’s office must have at least one “Safe Zone” for child custody exchanges under the new law. However, some sheriffs’ offices have made extra efforts to ensure more “Safe Zones” are available for child custody exchanges, such as the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which has 12 “Safe Zones” (and implemented them before the law came into effect). The law was initially named after Cassie Carli, a Florida mother who went missing and was murdered after meeting with her ex for a child custody exchange.
