In an award of alimony, the court may order periodic or lump sum payments. The court may consider the adultery of either spouse and any resulting economic impact in determining the amount of alimony, if any, to be awarded.” As such, the four types of alimony that may be available in a Miami divorce case are temporary, bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, and durational alimony.

Temporary alimony in a Miami divorce case refers to alimony that may be awarded during the pendency of the divorce proceedings to help one spouse financially up until the order of divorce is rendered. On the other hand, bridge-the-gap alimony may be awarded to either spouse to help that person transition from their previous life as a married person to single life. Bridge-the-gap alimony is only available for a limited time (up to two years). Rehabilitative alimony may be awarded to one ex-spouse to help that person become financially self-sufficient after divorce. This type of alimony is only available for up to five years. Lastly, durational alimony may be awarded for a set amount of time after a married couple gets divorced. The duration of how long the alimony will last, and how much the payments will be, are determined based on a number of factors, such as the duration of the marriage itself, and alimony recipient’s reasonable need, or the disparity in the soon-to-be exes’ incomes.
