Social Media Influencer Marries Herself, Becoming “Sologamous”, Then Divorces Self – Is Sologamous Marriage Legal in Miami?

Last week, the Miami Herald reported on an interesting story, one that has some Miami residents scratching their heads, and wondering whether, like Suellen Carey, they themselves can marry themselves. Indeed, the Brazilian social media influencer took wedding vows to herself last year in a ceremony in London, England, in a practice known as “sologamy”. On September 21, 2023, Carey posted to her Instagram account “Yes, public, I am sologamous” as a caption to her wedding ceremony photo where she was in a traditional church wearing a traditional white wedding dress. Of course, the social media influencer’s decision to become sologamous, and the ceremony itself, was certainly nothing traditional.

Carey’s reasoning for marrying herself comes from a place of wanting to learn to love herself. She stated of the sologamous marriage, “Over time I discovered and understood what I wanted. Today I value and love myself, I married myself here in London. This celebration is important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health. This is one of the happiest days of my life, I am grateful and very happy. I hope to inspire other people here too.” Having said that, however, a year later, in August, 2024, Carey now seeks to end her marriage to herself, noting that the loneliness of being married to oneself was too much for her. “It’s crucial to know when to end the cycle,” Carey said, “Even committing to oneself can have its challenges, such as dealing with the expectation of being perfect for yourself all the time.” Ultimately, although the social media influencer is now back on the market after ending her sologamous marriage, she does not regret her decision to go through with it. Carey concluded, “I realized that my sologamous marriage was a process of healing and self-discovery.”

“Sologamous” Marriage and Florida Marriage and Divorce Laws

Carey’s sologamous marriage may sound like an interesting option to some individuals in Miami, but the truth is that such marriages are not legally recognized in Miami under Florida marriage and divorce laws. In order to get married in Miami, a couple must meet certain requirements under the law, such as age and identification requirements, and must apply for a marriage license. An individual seeking to marry themselves would not meet these requirements. Importantly, “sologamous marriage” is distinguishable from “self-solemnization”, the process of a person officiating their own marriage. Although self-solemnization is legal in some states, it is not legal in the state of Florida.
