Is Holiday Stress Responsible for Pushing Some Families in Miami “Over the Edge”? Find Out Where to Get Help with Family Law and Divorce Matters Over the Stressful Winter Festivities

Most individuals and families in Miami would most likely agree that there are a couple times throughout the year when family stresses seem to “spike”, and tensions and arguments seem to build to a fever pitch. One of these stressful periods also happens to be what many describe as the “Best Time of the Year”, filled with holiday cheer and joy. Indeed, the fall-winter holiday period, encompassing basically the end of the Halloween season and the beginning of Thanksgiving all the way through to the first morning of the New Year, is for many in Miami a period of laughter, food, and fun, but for some is also a time of stress, pain, and suffering.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, during the “normal”, non-holiday parts of the year, one in four women and one in seven men is a victim of domestic violence. However, this number spikes throughout the holiday season. The jump in domestic violence calls is not unnoticeable, and Florida’s policemen and policewomen are well-versed in experiencing an uptick of domestic violence and family-law-related reports. Pensacola Police Officer Mike Wood said of the increase of family-related calls during the winter holidays, “Holidays can bring on anxiety and stress and maybe from a job that was lost here at the holidays, overuse of alcohol…There’s a lot of things that can happen, especially at this time of year, that can cause these situations to happen.” Domestic violence victims’ advocates in Florida can also see the rise in urgent family situations during the months of “Yuletide Spirit”. Tracie Hodson, the executive director for FavorHouse of Northwest Florida said of domestic violence cases during the holidays, “There is a slight spike around the holidays…A lot of that has to do with the added stress of the holidays. So [sic] family coming in and going to family, budget concerns — if you’re financially strapped anyway. Now you add on holiday meals and holiday gifts and all of that.”
