Increase in Domestic Violence Cases Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Has DV Advocates Concerned, Miami-Dade County Updates Domestic Violence Hotline

DomesticViolence

One of the things that some Miami domestic violence victims may wonder, either after a particularly vicious attack, or perhaps after years of enduring physical abuse at the hands of their spouse, is where they can go and what they can do when they are in a dangerous household. Indeed, as many Miami domestic violence victims and individuals in general have heard, leaving a domestic violence situation that is present in one’s home can be especially dangerous, and victims of domestic violence may need help leaving or escaping their abuser. For these reasons, Miami-Dade County has set up a hotline for victims of domestic violence to call, when things get rough and they need assistance. In June, that hotline was updated. The Miami-Dade County domestic violence hotline now includes four certified domestic violence shelters in the Miami-Dade area for domestic violence victims to turn to, and the system’s “Hotline advocates offer safety planning, information and referrals to victims, and crisis intervention….” In addition, the Miami-Dade County domestic violence hotline “Support is provided in English, Spanish, and Creole, with interpreting services available for over 170 languages. Additionally, TTY services are offered to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.” In light of the updates, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, “The safety and well-being of our residents is my top priority; as a social worker who has launched innovative programs for victims of domestic violence, I am passionate about ending the cycle of violence…This hotline is a lifeline and critical tool that connects victims of domestic violence with vital assistance. I am committed to leveraging every available resource to stem the violence, so that we can work towards a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and supported.” The new hotline number is 305-679-0303 and is now available 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Increase in Domestic Violence Cases Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Sparks Concerns for Domestic Violence Advocates

The COVID-19 Pandemic brought with it many changes to the lives of Miami-Dade residents, and one of those changes was certainly not for the better. According to the National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice, domestic violence incidents leaped a whopping 8.1% during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Accordingly, there are more cases of domestic violence in the United States, and throughout Miami, than in previous years, and victims of domestic violence need help throughout the country and the state.
