Miami Woman Killed in Domestic Violence Attack, Domestic Violence Suspected, Domestic Violence Calls Up in Miami Dade Area
The death of a Miami woman due to alleged domestic violence by a family or household member highlights the true dangers domestic violence cases present and underscores the fact that domestic violence calls are up by a significant amount in the Miami Dade area. According to local news reports, NBC Miami South Florida 6, 27-year-old Chavley Acanda Gonzalez was killed by being shot on Sunday, November 17. The fatal alleged domestic violence incident occurred, tragically, just after Gonzalez had celebrated her birthday. Investigators reveal that Gonzalez was shot several times by her killer and her body was found in the parking lot of the apartment building where she lived. Just hours after Gonzalez’s body was found, a man is reported to have turned himself into the City of Miami Police Department, and was later transferred to Miami Gardens. The man was not identified to the public by Miami authorities. However, Miami police are investigating Gonzalez’s death as a “domestic incident.”
Dr. Linda Parker of Miami Dade’s Women in Distress center for domestic abuse victims and survivors noted of the terrible death of Ms. Gonzalez potentially to domestic violence, “There are just no words. It’s so rampant right now…Broward is number 4 in the state for domestic violence cases. Miami Dade is, I believe, third. So, we carry a lot of the cases.” According to Dr. Parker, in fact, calls to the Women in Distress center regarding domestic violence were up by 66% in 2024, just from the year before. In Florida alone, so far this year there have been in excess of 15,000 domestic violence calls. Of the rise of domestic violence calls from the Miami Dade area coming into the center, Dr. Parker said, “Those numbers are frightening because it’s not just the domestic violence rising but it’s the level of anger… the level of frustration and anger being taken out on another human…Those numbers are not going down. We just haven’t seen any decrease.” Notably, police indicate that there was a “documented history of domestic violence” between Gonzalez and her spouse.
Dr. Parker closed with a message to those in the Miami area that may be experiencing domestic violence at the hands of a family or household member, “It’s not going to get better…No matter how much you try to make it better, you can’t force someone who is broken to fix themselves without serious help.”
